TV stand, TV base or trolley: what's the difference?

The terms TV stand and television stand are commonly used for different products. The main difference is where the support is positioned: directly on the floor or on an existing piece of furniture. Then choose whether the screen will stay in one place or needs to be mobile.

1. A passive TV floor stand for a fixed setup

A fixed TV floor stand consists of a floor plate or legs, a column and a screen mount. The television is mounted on the stand. Examples include a welcome screen in a hotel lobby, information at a trade show or a television in the living room. The Wolff Mount TVB-66 is one example.

By passive, we mean that the stand does not have electric height adjustment. Some models may allow you to adjust the height or viewing angle manually. Our fixed TV stands do not have wheels on the base. So fixed does not automatically mean that the screen cannot be adjusted.

2. A TV stand to replace the original feet

Are you looking for a TV stand because your television’s original legs or base are missing, broken or don’t fit your cabinet? Then you probably mean a replacement TV stand. It sits on a table, sideboard or TV cabinet and takes over the function of the original stand supplied with the TV. Examples include the Wolff Mount TVB-61, the TVB-64 and the Barkan S320. These are tabletop setups, not tall floor stands.

What is a TV presentation stand or trolley?

A TV presentation stand supports a large screen for a meeting, lesson, video call or presentation. The term mainly describes its use. A fixed floor stand can be used for a presentation; a model with wheels is called a TV trolley or mobile TV stand.

Wheels and electric adjustment are two different features. A trolley can be adjusted in height manually or electrically. Also check whether shelves, camera or video bar mounts are included; this varies by product.

How to check whether your TV will fit

1. Note the exact TV model. Look up the weight without the original base and the VESA size. VESA describes the horizontal and vertical distance between the mounting holes.
2. Compare three details at once. The stand must support the screen size, weight, and exact VESA pattern. The same screen size alone is not enough.
3. Measure the setup. Check the base width and depth, viewing height, and clearance for connections. For a table base, the furniture must also be able to support the entire setup.
4. Check the features and the manual. Pay attention to swivel, tilt, height adjustment, approved mounting options, and the included parts. Do not modify a stand yourself beyond the manufacturer's instructions.

Other solutions: electric stand or built-in lift

An electric TV stand is useful when the screen height needs to be adjusted regularly. A built-in TV lift is used to move a television in or out of a piece of furniture.
