What is a VESA size? Measuring VESA sizes and choosing a TV mount

What is a VESA size? How to measure the back of your TV

Want to mount your television on the wall or ceiling? Then the VESA size is one of the most important details to check. This measurement describes the distance between the mounting holes on the back of your TV. It determines which TV mounts can be attached to your television.

In this comprehensive guide, we explain how to measure the VESA size yourself, which sizes are common, what to do with non-standard hole patterns and what to consider when choosing screws and VESA adapters. This helps you avoid ordering a mount that does not fit.

Important: a suitable VESA size is not enough. Always also check the weight, permitted screen size, required space and mounting surface.

How to measure the VESA size yourself: step by step

The VESA size is shown as width × height in millimeters. You measure from the center of one screw hole to the center of the other. So do not measure the outer edges of the holes or the full width of your television.

  1. Find the mounting holes. Look at the back of your TV for four screw holes. They may sometimes be covered with caps or recessed.
  2. Measure horizontally. Measure from the center of the left mounting hole to the center of the right mounting hole.
  3. Measure vertically. Measure from the center of the top hole to the center of the bottom hole.
  4. Record the result in millimeters. For example, 400 mm wide and 200 mm high: your TV then has VESA 400 × 200.

Practical example: you measure 40 centimeters between the left and right holes and 30 centimeters between the top and bottom holes. That is 400 × 300 mm, or VESA 400 × 300. The horizontal measurement always comes first.

Can't you safely access the back? Look up the VESA specification in the manual or on the manufacturer's website using the exact model number.

Which VESA sizes are available? Examples and dimensions

There are various square and rectangular VESA patterns. The measurements below are examples; the screen size or brand does not automatically determine the VESA size.

VESA size Horizontal Vertical Example
75 × 75 7.5 cm 7.5 cm Compact pattern
100 × 100 10 cm 10 cm Compact pattern
200 × 100 20 cm 10 cm Rectangular
200 × 200 20 cm 20 cm Square
300 × 200 30 cm 20 cm Rectangular
300 × 300 30 cm 30 cm Square
400 × 200 40 cm 20 cm Rectangular
400 × 300 40 cm 30 cm Rectangular
400 × 400 40 cm 40 cm Square
600 × 400 60 cm 40 cm Larger pattern
800 × 400 80 cm 40 cm Extra-wide pattern
800 × 600 80 cm 60 cm Large pattern

These are not all existing combinations. Some TVs and professional displays use non-standard sizes or special mounting solutions. Therefore, always check your model's exact specifications.

Which TV mount is suitable for your VESA size?

The product page for a TV mount states which VESA sizes it supports. If your exact size is listed in the specifications and your TV also meets the other requirements, the mount may be suitable. Some mounts support multiple patterns through adjustable mounting arms. Note that a specified maximum VESA size does not automatically mean that every smaller or different intermediate size will fit.

Therefore, check these four points: exact VESA compatibility, TV weight without the stand, permitted screen size and clearance, and the mounting surface and installation method. For example, a TV with VESA 400 × 400 may still be unsuitable for a mount with insufficient load capacity.

View our TV wall mounts, TV ceiling mounts, or mounts for large TVs and check compatibility for each product.

Is VESA the same for Samsung, LG, Philips, Sony, TCL, and Hisense?

VESA is a widely used standard for mounting holes, but TVs from the same brand do not automatically have the same hole pattern. Even two screens with the same diagonal size may have a different VESA size, weight, or screw length. Therefore, search by the exact model number, not just by brand or screen size.

On some TVs, the mounting holes are lower on the back, recessed, or the rear panel is angled. As a result, the screen may end up higher or lower after mounting than expected. If the final viewing height is important, measure the position of the holes relative to the top and bottom of the TV. Very flat models and special designs may require additional mounting instructions.

If desired, view our Samsung TV mounts and the full range, but always check your own TV's product specifications.

VESA adapter: what if the mounting holes do not line up?

Does your TV's hole pattern not fit the desired bracket? A VESA adapter may sometimes provide a solution. An adapter changes the available mounting points between the TV and the bracket. This is useful, for example, when you want to combine a compact hole pattern with a bracket that supports different sizes.

However, an adapter is not universal. Check the supported VESA sizes on both sides, the screw holes, the weight, and the overall combination of TV, adapter, and bracket. An adapter cannot make a bracket with insufficient load capacity stronger. The additional plate may also affect the distance from the wall or the clearance for connections.

View our VESA adapters and compare the sizes carefully before ordering.

Which VESA screws and spacers do you need?

The screws used to attach the TV to the bracket must match the TV's thread and the permitted insertion depth. Many models use metric screws such as M4, M6 or M8, but you cannot reliably determine the correct size from the VESA size alone. Consult the TV manual.

A screw that is too short may not provide sufficient grip; a screw that is too long can damage components inside the TV. Some TVs need spacers because the back is curved, the holes are recessed, or clearance is needed for connections. Only use the combination specified as suitable in the mounting instructions, and never force a screw that does not turn smoothly into the thread.

Many brackets come with a set of mounting screws, but they cannot cover every possible TV combination. If necessary, view our mounting accessories and check the manufacturer's specifications.

Common mistakes when determining the VESA size

  • Measuring the outside of the screw holes: always measure from center to center.
  • Reversing the measurements: the horizontal distance is stated first.
  • Confusing screen size with VESA: a 55-inch TV does not automatically have one fixed VESA size.
  • Looking only at the maximum hole pattern: check whether the bracket supports your exact combination.
  • Forgetting the weight: even a perfectly matching hole pattern is unsafe when the TV is too heavy.
  • Choosing screws by feel: use the correct diameter and length according to the manual.
  • Ignoring recessed holes: check whether spacers and sufficient clearance are needed.

Frequently asked questions about VESA sizes

Where can I find my TV's VESA size?

In the manual or technical specifications of the exact TV model. You can also measure the size yourself between the four mounting holes on the back.

What does VESA 400 × 400 mean?

The mounting holes are 400 mm apart horizontally and 400 mm apart vertically, measured center to center.

Is VESA 200 × 100 the same as 100 × 200?

No. The first measurement is horizontal, the second vertical. Check whether the mount supports the exact orientation.

Does every TV have four VESA holes?

Many televisions have four mounting points, but there are also nonstandard and brand-specific solutions. Therefore, always check the manufacturer's information.

Does a VESA 400 × 400 TV fit a mount with a maximum VESA of 600 × 400?

Possibly, but not automatically. The mount must explicitly support 400 × 400 and have sufficient load capacity.

What VESA size does a 55-, 65-, or 75-inch TV have?

It varies by brand and model. Screen size alone is insufficient to determine the VESA size.

Can I use a VESA adapter for a larger television?

Only if the adapter, mount, and TV are compatible according to their specifications. An adapter does not increase the load capacity.

How do I know which screws my TV needs?

Refer to the manufacturer's installation instructions. Diameter, length, and any spacers vary by model.

Can I mount a television without standard VESA holes?

Sometimes a model-specific solution exists. Do not use a random adapter or homemade mounting solution without suitable manufacturer information.

Can I measure the VESA size while my TV is still on its stand?

This is possible when the four mounting holes are safely accessible. If necessary, move a large screen with two people and avoid putting pressure on the panel.

Are you unsure about your TV's VESA size?

Send us the exact brand and model number of your television or a clear photo of the back. We will then help you check the VESA size and choose a suitable mount.
